1199 IHSU Mission Statement
We, 1199SEIU UHWE In House Staff, proudly announce that we are forming our union. We believe deeply that SEIU's mission of dignity, respect, and unions for all applies to all workers, including ourselves.
Since its founding, 1199 has been dedicated to promoting these very principles. At its core, our work is about ensuring that every single healthcare worker has a seat at the decision-making table and the power to uplift the communities in their care. Our staff union is our way of bringing our values home, to ensure a brighter future for 1199. Practicing workplace democracy in our own house will help us to better organize, uplift, and empower 1199 members to win.
In this spirit, we, staff from every department and region across 1199SEIU UHWE, have made the historic decision to form our staff union with the Washington-Baltimore News Guild: WBNG Local 32035, The NewsGuild-CWA , AFL-CIO.
WBNG shares our values of racial & economic justice, and democracy at work. At WBNG we will be joined by our union siblings from across the media industry, social justice non-profits, and other labor union staff just like us.
United, we can make sure that everyone who works at 1199 feels heard, supported, and empowered: that we are all fairly compensated and our benefits are protected in a contract, that we have a voice in the decisions that affect our work and wellbeing, and to grow our capacity to support 1199 members in our fight for quality care and good jobs for all.
We call upon 1199 leadership to live our union values and respect our right to organize. 1199 In House Staff are ready to win our election on June 14 and say UNION YES! Ain’t no stopping us now!

The Washington-Baltimore News Guild (WBNG) is the union for more than 3,000 media, non-profit, and labor union staff in the mid-Atlantic region and beyond.
Like 1199, WBNG represents members across different states and regions. Like us, WBNG members work at prominent organizations that advance civil rights, workers’ rights, and social justice.
WBNG is one of the largest locals of The NewsGuild international union: the largest union of communications employees in North America, with more than 25,000 members.
The NewsGuild is part of the 700,000-member-strong Communications Workers of America (CWA), which is affiliated with the AFL-CIO.
Like 1199, WBNG represents members across different states and regions. Like us, WBNG members work at prominent organizations that advance civil rights, workers’ rights, and social justice.
